Planning a farm fence on acreage near Columbus
Fencing land is a different discipline from fencing a yard. The materials are cheaper per foot, the distances are longer, and the thing that decides whether the fence is still tight in ten years is a component most people never think about.
Get north of the Columbus city limits into Harris County, or east and south into the more rural stretches, and the fence conversation changes shape. A residential fence is priced in the low hundreds of feet and judged largely on appearance. A farm fence is priced in the thousands of feet and judged on whether it holds. Those are different problems, and applying residential thinking to acreage is how people spend three times what they needed to.
Start with what the fence is holding
Everything follows from this. Cattle push and lean. Horses lean and are prone to injury on anything they can get a leg through. Goats and sheep test every gap and go under. Nothing at all, meaning the fence is a boundary marker, is a legitimate answer too and it opens up much cheaper options.
- Woven wire, sometimes called field fence. The general-purpose choice. Graduated mesh, tighter at the bottom, holds most livestock and keeps small animals from pushing through.
- High-tensile smooth wire. The lowest cost per foot over distance. The wire is designed to stretch and return with temperature rather than sag permanently, and in-line strainers let it be re-tensioned.
- Barbed wire. Traditional for cattle perimeter, cheap, and not appropriate anywhere horses or people are close.
- Board fence, two or three board. The appearance choice for road frontage, and by itself it contains very little.
- Split rail. Visual boundary only. Horses lean over it and calves walk through it.
The common practical arrangement on a property with road frontage is board or split rail where it is seen, with woven wire fastened to the field side so the fence does its job, and plain woven wire or high-tensile on the back lines where nobody is looking.
Corners carry the whole fence
This is the point that separates a farm fence that lasts from one that sags in three years. A wire fence is a structure under tension, and every bit of that tension ends up at the corners and ends. A corner post on its own, however large, will lean, and once a corner leans the whole run goes slack.
The answer is a braced assembly. An H-brace is two posts connected by a horizontal member with a diagonal wire tensioned across it, and it converts the pull of the fence into a load the assembly can resist. Long runs and heavy tension use a double H. This is not an optional upgrade, it is the structural element of the fence, and a quote that does not describe the corner assemblies is not describing the fence.
Post spacing
Woven wire on general perimeter commonly runs posts every ten to twelve feet, tightening where the ground rolls, where the fence changes direction, and where stock crowd a corner or a gate. High-tensile smooth wire can go considerably further between posts, because the wire itself carries tension, with lighter stays between posts holding the wire spacing.
On long runs many posts are driven rather than set in concrete. In Piedmont clay that works well and is dramatically faster, and concrete is reserved for corners, ends and gate posts where the loads concentrate. Where the ground is rocky, which happens on the Harris County ridges, driving becomes difficult and the cost of the fence rises accordingly.
Gates for equipment, not for people
Farm gates are sized by what has to pass through them, and the mistake people regret is going too narrow. A gate that a tractor fits through with care is a gate that will be scraped eventually, and a gate that a truck and trailer cannot make the turn into is a gate that gets left open. Think about the turning approach as well as the opening width.
Gate posts on a farm gate take a serious cantilever load, since farm gates are long and heavy. They get set in concrete, larger than the line posts, and braced. A gate that drags in year two is almost always a gate post that was treated like a line post.
Before anything gets built
- Survey the boundary. On rural tracts old fence lines, tree lines and deed calls disagree with each other more often than not. A current survey with pins set is cheap relative to the fence and settles the question before it becomes a dispute.
- Walk the whole line. Creek crossings, wet ground, rock outcrops and heavy timber all change the cost, and none of them show properly on aerial imagery.
- Place the gates on paper first. Where equipment needs to move between fields decides gate locations, and moving a gate later means rebuilding two braced ends.
- Georgia 811. Long runs cross more buried services than short ones. The locate request costs nothing.
Where the money goes
On a long fence the wire is a surprisingly small fraction of the total. Labor, posts, and the braced assemblies at every corner, end and gate are where the budget sits. That is why fencing a square is so much cheaper per foot than fencing a shape that follows every jog in the property, and why dividing a property into many small paddocks costs far more than the extra wire suggests.
