Chain link is still the cheapest way to enclose a yard, and it is everywhere in the older parts of Columbus because it went up cheaply in the postwar building boom and it does not rot. Residential chain link generally runs about $14 to $26 per linear foot installed for four foot galvanized, with black vinyl-coated fabric adding roughly a third to that. Black coating is worth considering on a residential line for one non-obvious reason: the mesh visually disappears against a wooded background, which matters on lots that back onto the creek corridors and pine stands around the city. The specification that decides whether a chain link fence stays tight is the framework, not the fabric. Line posts, terminal posts and top rail come in different wall thicknesses, and the light residential grades bend where a commercial grade would not. Corner and gate posts take the tension load, so they get larger diameter pipe and deeper footings than the line posts do. Fabric comes in mesh sizes and wire gauges, and the difference between an 11.5 gauge and a 9 gauge fabric is exactly the difference between a fence that bags out where a dog leans on it and one that does not.

Questions about chain link
- Will chain link hold a dog that digs?
- Not on its own. The fabric stops at the ground and a determined digger goes under it. The standard answers are a bottom tension wire threaded through the last row of mesh and tied to the posts, a buried apron of fabric turned outward and covered with soil, or a concrete mow strip. Any of the three costs far less than replacing the fence after the dog teaches itself the trick.
- How much more is black vinyl-coated chain link?
- Roughly a third more than plain galvanized in this market. The coating is bonded over galvanized wire, so it adds a corrosion layer as well as the color. The practical argument for it is visual: black mesh reads as much less visible than shiny galvanized against trees and shrubs, which is why it is common on the back lines of wooded lots even when the side lines stay galvanized.
- Does chain link need a top rail?
- Residential four foot fence is usually built with a top rail because it keeps the fabric line straight and gives the fence rigidity where people lean on it. Taller commercial and industrial runs sometimes use a top tension wire instead, which costs less and lets the fabric flex rather than dent. Height, use and appearance drive the choice more than any rule does.
