Heat is the other consideration: vinyl expands and contracts with temperature, so rails are set into routed posts with room to move rather than fastened tight. On a hot July afternoon a properly built vinyl fence has visible play in the rails, and that is correct, not a defect. Vinyl also handles impact differently from wood; it flexes and returns in warm weather and is more brittle on the rare cold morning.

- Does vinyl fence turn yellow in Georgia sun?
- Quality vinyl does not, and cheap vinyl does. The difference is the formulation of the outer layer: co-extruded product puts the ultraviolet inhibitors and titanium dioxide where the sunlight hits, while a single-extrusion panel spreads whatever additives it has through the whole wall. Ask which one a quote is based on. Two fences that look identical on install day can look very different after five Georgia summers.
- Is vinyl cheaper than wood over time?
- Often, though it depends how long you stay. Vinyl costs roughly a third to a half more to install and then costs essentially nothing to maintain. Pine costs less to install and wants stain every two to four years plus eventual post replacement. Somewhere around year ten to twelve the running totals cross. If the house is a five year house, wood usually wins on money; if it is a forever house, vinyl usually does.
- What happens to vinyl fence in a storm?
- Vinyl privacy panels present a solid face to wind, the same as wood privacy panels do, so wind load is carried by the posts either way. Well-built vinyl uses reinforced posts and appropriately sized footings for that reason. Vinyl also has a useful failure mode: rails can pop out of routed posts under extreme load and be reseated, where a wood rail would have split. Impact from a falling limb is the more common real-world damage here, and single panels can be replaced.
