Aluminum and Ornamental Fencing in Columbus

Powder-coated aluminum picket fence for front yards, pools, and historic-district streetscapes.

Aluminum picket fence is the material of choice when the fence has to be seen rather than hidden. It reads as wrought iron from the street, it does not rust the way real iron does because aluminum forms its own oxide layer, and the powder coat is baked on rather than painted. In Columbus it shows up most on front yards and pool enclosures in the older midtown streets, where a solid privacy fence would look wrong against a 1920s house and a 1960s ranch alike. Installed cost generally runs about $34 to $60 per linear foot depending on grade and height. Aluminum comes in residential, commercial and industrial grades that differ in picket wall thickness and rail size, and the grade decides whether a panel flexes when a child climbs it. The other specification that matters here is racking: panels sold as rackable pivot at the picket-to-rail connection so a run can follow a slope without stepping, which is useful on the terraced lots that step down toward the river. Aluminum is also the usual answer for a pool enclosure, because a four foot picket fence with no horizontal footholds and a self-closing self-latching gate is the standard barrier arrangement.

What this work covers

  • Powder-coated aluminum in residential through industrial grades
  • Flat-top, spear-top, and puppy-picket panel styles in three to six foot heights
  • Rackable panels for sloped yards, adjustable without cutting or stepping
  • Pool-code panel configurations with self-closing, self-latching gate hardware
  • Post caps, finials and matching walk and drive gates
  • Powder-coated hardware so hinges and latches match rather than announcing themselves

Questions about aluminum fence

Is aluminum strong enough, or is steel a better choice?
For residential fence, aluminum is normally the better trade. Steel is stronger per section but it rusts wherever the coating is broken, and a fence gets nicked by trimmers every summer. Aluminum forms a protective oxide instead. Where genuinely high strength is the point, a security perimeter or a vehicle barrier, steel earns the extra maintenance. For a front yard or a pool, aluminum does the job and stays looking new longer.
Can aluminum fence be used as a pool barrier?
It is the most common material for one. A pool barrier has to be tall enough, free of climbable horizontal members on the outside, spaced so a small child cannot pass through, and gated with hardware that closes and latches by itself. Aluminum picket panels are manufactured in configurations built to those requirements. The pool guide on this site covers the barrier rules in detail, and the local building official has the final say on any given installation.
What does the powder coat warranty cover?
Manufacturer finish warranties on quality aluminum fence generally cover peeling, flaking, blistering and significant chalking for a long term, sometimes for as long as the original buyer owns the home. They do not cover mechanical damage, so a gouge from a mower is on you. Terms vary by manufacturer, and the paperwork is worth reading before you choose between two lines that look identical on the sample board.
