Gates and Automatic Openers in Columbus

Walk gates, double drive gates, and automatic gate operators built to swing true for years.

Gates are the moving part, which means gates are where fences fail. Everything that goes wrong with a fence over ten years tends to show up first at the gate: the post leans, the frame racks out of square, the latch stops lining up and the gate drags. Building one that does not do that is mostly a matter of overbuilding the things nobody sees. Gate posts carry a swinging cantilever load that line posts never see, so they get larger material and a deeper, wider footing. The frame gets a diagonal brace running from the bottom hinge corner up to the top latch corner, in tension, so the weight of the gate pulls against the brace rather than sagging the frame. Hardware gets sized generously, because a hinge that is merely adequate on install day is undersized after a thousand cycles. Drive gates add their own considerations: a double gate needs a drop rod and a level strike point, a single gate wider than about twelve feet is usually better as a cantilever slide than a swing, and any automatic operator needs power run to it and safety devices that reverse the gate when something is in the way.

What this work covers

  • Oversized gate posts with footings sized for a swinging cantilever load
  • Diagonal tension bracing from the bottom hinge corner to the top latch corner
  • Heavy-duty hinges and latches matched to gate weight, not to the fence around them
  • Double drive gates with drop rods and a set strike point
  • Cantilever slide gates where a swing arc will not clear the drive
  • Swing and slide operators with keypads, remotes, and reversing safety devices

Questions about gates

Why does my gate drag when the fence beside it is fine?
Two usual causes. Either the gate post has leaned under the constant sideways pull of the gate, which points at a footing that was not sized for the load, or the gate frame itself has racked out of square, which points at a missing or wrongly oriented diagonal brace. The brace has to run from the bottom hinge corner up to the top latch corner so it works in tension. Run the other way it does nothing useful, and that is a surprisingly common mistake.
How wide can a swing gate be before it needs to slide?
A single swing leaf much past about twelve feet gets heavy enough that hinge and post loads grow faster than the convenience is worth, and it also needs a large clear arc to open into. Splitting the opening into a double gate keeps each leaf manageable. Where the drive is short or the ground rises behind the gate so a swing will not clear, a cantilever slide gate is the usual answer, since it travels parallel to the fence line and needs no arc at all.
What does an automatic gate operator need to work?
Power at the gate, which frequently means a trench and a licensed electrician, a control method such as a keypad, remote or intercom, and safety devices that stop and reverse the gate when something interrupts it. Automatic gates are covered by a safety standard that addresses entrapment protection, so a competent installer will fit photo eyes or edge sensors as a matter of course. A gravel or paved drive that stays level through the gate travel also matters more than people expect.
