Red Clay and the Reason Fence Posts Lean

Piedmont clay holds a post firmly and holds water against it just as firmly. What that does over twelve years, and four cheap details that change it.


Push on the posts of any fifteen year old wood fence on the north side of Columbus. Some will be solid. Some will rock at the base with very little effort. The pickets on both look about the same.

That difference was decided on the day the fence was built, and almost all of it comes down to what happened in the hole.

Clay is a good anchor and a bad drain

North of the Fall Line, which runs through Columbus, the soil is Cecil-series red clay, the classic Southeastern Piedmont material. It is made of very fine particles that pack tightly, which is why it grips a post well and why digging it in August is such miserable work.

The same fine particles hold water and release it slowly. Columbus gets just under forty-nine inches of rain a year, spread through the year rather than concentrated in a season. A post set in clay with nothing done about drainage is standing in water that takes days rather than hours to leave, several dozen times a year, for as long as the fence exists.

Where the rot happens, and why there

Not at the bottom of the post. Not up at the rails. In a band a few inches either side of the soil line.

Wood decay fungi need three things at once: wood, moisture and oxygen. Deep in the hole there is moisture and wood but not much oxygen. Well above grade there is wood and oxygen but the wood dries between rains. At the soil line all three are present continuously, and that is where a post gives out.

This is why a fence fails from the ground up rather than from the top down, and why a fence with perfectly sound pickets can be leaning.

Four details, none of them expensive

Ground contact rated posts. Pressure-treated lumber comes in different preservative retention levels. The ground contact rating carries considerably more preservative than the above-ground rating, and it is what belongs below grade. Rails and pickets can be the lighter rating. Using above-ground posts to save money is a very effective way to lose several years.

A hole about three times the post width. A four inch post wants roughly a twelve inch hole. Narrow holes give a thin shell of concrete that cracks, and a cracked concrete shell around a post is worse than no concrete, because water gets in and then cannot get out.

Gravel in the bottom. Several inches under the post so the end grain has somewhere to drain. In sandy soil this matters little because the soil drains anyway. In clay it matters a lot and costs almost nothing.

Concrete crowned above grade. Finish the concrete above ground level and slope it away from the post on every side. Concrete finished flat, or dished, becomes a bowl that collects rain right at the soil line. This one detail undoes the other three when it is skipped.

Depth is about wind, not frost

People coming from further north ask about frost depth. It is not the driver here, because winters in this part of Georgia are mild.

Wind is the driver. The rule most installers work to is roughly a third of the post length below grade, so a six foot fence goes on eight foot posts with about two feet in the ground. What varies that is how solid the fence is. A six foot privacy panel presents a full face to the wind and puts real force into every post. A six foot chain link or picket fence with gaps lets most of the air through. Same height, very different loads, and the footings should not be identical.

What changes south of town

Cross the Fall Line heading south, out toward Cusseta, and the soil turns sandy. The rot clock slows down because the ground drains. The trade is grip: sand gives a post less lateral support, so the concrete footing carries more of the wind load, holes go deeper, and a footing that is wider at the bottom than the top does more good than it would in clay.

A crew that works both sides of the line adjusts for this without being asked. It is one of the more useful things to listen for when someone is quoting.

After the fence is up

Keep mulch and soil pulled back from the base of the posts. Adjust irrigation that sprays the fence. Top up concrete crowns that have settled flat. None of it takes long and all of it is working on the same few inches of post that decide when the fence ends.
